Ocean eddy tracking with circlets
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a new method for detecting circles on digital images. This transform is called the circlet transform and can be seen as an extension of classical 1D wavelets in 2D: each basic element is a circle convolved by a 1D wavelet. In comparison with other circle-detector methods, mainly the Hough transform, the circlet transform takes into account the finite frequency aspect of the data: a circular shape is not restricted to a circle but has a certain width. The transform operates directly on image gradient and does not need further binary segmentation. The implementation is efficient as it consists of a few Fast Fourier Transforms. We apply the method to detect eddies on remote sensing images of chlorophyll from the Gulf of Lion (North Western Mediterranean Sea). The results show the effectiveness of the method to deal with real images with blurry edges.

A New Approach to Ocean Eddy Detection, Tracking, and Event Visualization-Application to The Northwest Pacific Ocean
High-resolution ocean general circulation models have advanced the numerical study of ocean eddies. To gain an understanding of ocean eddies from the large volume of data produced by simulations, visualizing just the distribution of eddies at each time step is insufficient; timevariations in eddy events and phenomena must also be considered. However, existing methods cannot accurately detect an...
متن کاملOcean Eddy Identification and Tracking using Neural Networks
Global climate change plays an essential role in our daily life and is nowadays one of the most important topics. Mesoscale ocean eddies have a significant impact on global warming, since they dominate the ocean dynamics, the energy as well as the mass transports of ocean circulation. In particular, from satellite altimetry we can derive high-resolution, global maps containing ocean signals wit...
متن کاملMultiple Hypothesis Object Tracking For Unsupervised Self-Learning: An Ocean Eddy Tracking Application
Mesoscale ocean eddies transport heat, salt, energy, and nutrients across oceans. As a result, accurately identifying and tracking such phenomena are crucial for understanding ocean dynamics and marine ecosystem sustainability. Traditionally, ocean eddies are monitored through two phases: identification and tracking. A major challenge for such an approach is that the tracking phase is dependent...
متن کاملInterface Exchange as an Indicator for Eddy Heat Transport
The ocean contains many large-scale, long-lived vortices, called mesoscale eddies, that are believed to have a role in the transport and redistribution of salt, heat, and nutrients throughout the ocean. Determining this role, however, has proven to be a challenge, since the mechanics of eddies are only partly understood; a standard definition for these ocean eddies does not exist and, therefore...
متن کاملExtracting, Visualizing and Tracking Mesoscale Ocean Eddies in Two-dimensional Image Sequences Using Contours and Moments
We introduce a system for the extraction and tracking of mesoscale eddies captured in massive global ocean simulations. The major strength and contribution of our system is its design, which is based on two-dimensional image data processing. The Cinema database [CD] makes possible the generation and storage of two-dimensional image data taken in-situ, i.e., the creation of images via a virtual ...
